Music Tuition

At Chipping Sodbury School we offer a wide range of peripatetic lessons in music for all our students across all the year groups.  Our peripatetic teachers are employed by WEMA (West of England Music and Arts) and whilst they allow the school to co-ordinate applications for lessons, the school does not directly employ the teachers.

All peripatetic teachers have an up-to-date enhanced disclosure in order to meet our safeguarding expectations and work in school, and lessons all take place in our two purpose-built practice rooms or a music classroom.

Lessons can be provided for the following instruments:

Piano – on a school piano

Woodwind – flute, clarinet, saxophone,

Strings – violin, viola, cello, double bass

Brass – tuba, trumpet, trombone, cornet, horn

Guitar – acoustic, electric, classical, electric bass

Drums – on the school’s drum kit

Singing – in a range of styles from musical theatre to classical and pop

In some cases we have several teachers for an individual instrument because demand can be so high.

Students can bring their own instruments in for lessons.  Alternatively, we also have a small collection of instruments at school or you are able to loan instruments from WEMA if you cannot or do not wish to provide an instrument for your child either at first or in the long term.

Lessons cost £135 per double-term for 10 lessons.  This either consists of 20 minutes individual or 30 minute paired lessons.

Please note that you will be required to pay for peripatetic lessons in advance of each term and you will need to provide a term’s written notice in order to cancel lessons.

For students who have received free school meals in the last six years we are able to pay for a student to have free music lessons over a fixed period.

Lessons take place during the school day.  Students have a fixed lesson time which may be anytime between 8.50 - 3.10.  Priority for lessons during break and lunchtime is given to older students.  Care is taken to avoid scheduling lessons during PE or DT whenever possible.

Research has shown that there is a very positive impact of music lessons on a child’s development and as our students progress through the school, they discover that the resilience, independence and creativity shown through learning to play a musical instrument, is a positive factor in applying for college, apprenticeships and university.

Students are able to rehearse and perform in a range of groups and ensembles every week including rock bands, choir, and orchestra.  Students perform in a wide variety of venues including Chipping Sodbury Town Hall, The Parish Church of St John’s, partner primary schools and The Bath Forum.  We have close links with WEMA as well as professional music organisations such as English National Opera.

An application form for music lessons is available from the music department.
