Science is one of the three core
subjects in the National Curriculum.
In Year Seven students begin a course
which follows the Programme of Study for Key Stage Three. Great importance is attached to the information about pupils
passed on from Primary Schools. Achievements
in Year Six are recognised and continuity and progression is achieved by
ensuring that work is appropriate to every pupil’s needs, ability and
experience. In Years Seven, Eight
and Nine pupils are taught in ability groups according to attainment and needs.

In Years
Seven to Nine the emphasis is on developing scientific knowledge, skills and
understanding in an enjoyable manner, through interesting and relevant courses,
using a variety of learning styles while still meeting the demands of the
National Curriculum.
Towards the end of Year Nine all students take National Standard Assessment Tests in Science.
The results of these tests provide information about pupils’ knowledge
and understanding of Science; and through assessment carried out by teachers,
students’ ability to plan and carry out Scientific Investigations is measured.
The investigations carried out are linked to the topic being studied.
The skills needed to make predictions, design and carry out
investigations safely underpin all the topics studied during Key Stage Three.
Students
at
Chipping Sodbury School have frequent opportunities to develop and demonstrate
their skills in Scientific Investigations.
Use is made of computers, not only to assist and extend learning but also
to control operations and collect data from investigations.
In Years Ten and Eleven students are able to choose from a
range of Science qualifications including – Core and Additional Modular Science
or separate Sciences (Chemistry, Physics and or Biology). Students can therefore
complete single, double or triple science and assessment at the end of Key Stage
Four would then lead to the award of one, two or three GCSE grades
respectively.
Members of the faculty regularly organise lunchtime or after school ‘Master
Classes’ in order to further support students learning. The majority of GCSE
students purchase revision guides, which is frequently used as a reference point
for homework and revision.
In the Sixth Form (Years Twelve and Thirteen) courses in AS and A2 Level
Biology, Chemistry and Physics are offered.
