Aims

We aim to encourage students’ enjoyment and interest in mathematics and to develop their abilities and confidence in the subject. We endeavour to equip all students with the mathematical skills required to cope with the demands of everyday life and to ensure that all students achieve to their highest potential.

Curriculum

Through developing links with neighbouring primary schools, we have eased the transition to secondary school and ensured curriculum continuity. We are supporting the National Numeracy Scheme and the KS3 framework with lessons covering basic numeracy. In addition Success In Maths materials will be used to support our courses. Students who have difficulty achieving SATs Level 4 will use SMP Interact ‘T’ course.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 use Success in Mathematics materials. Year 7 will start the year being taught in sets and will work both on class activities and individually, using texts providing differentiated materials.  Students who have not reached Level 4 at KS2 will work on the Springboard materials and be able to resit the progress tests in May 2007. In Year 10 students are working towards the new two-tier examination and use School Mathematics Project (SMP) materials and Edexcel materials. In Year 11, students use the SMP Interact materials and are set according to their attainment and follow courses leading to appropriate levels at KS3 and GCSE. Whilst developing and reinforcing important mathematical skills, students tackle a variety of tasks including investigative and practical work. We reinforce numeracy skills and encourage the constructive use of calculators and introduce computers to explore many areas of mathematics.

Students are regularly assessed through coursework, tests and examinations, and movement between sets is possible at all stages.

Support and Enrichment

In Year 7 students who have not achieved KS2 Level 4 will be given extra support. Students of all ages and abilities are supported in their learning through individual help. Less able students are taught in smaller groups with additional staffing for one-to-one guidance. In Year 11 the OCR Modular GCSE course is followed to enable students to gain a GCSE qualification. In Year 10 students follow the Edexcel course leading to the Higher or Foundation qualification at GCSE. This course is modular: 50% of the result is based on course work and module exams.

Our more able students are provided with challenging experiences. We participate in the National Mathematics competitions and encourage Year 8 students to attend the Bristol Masterclasses. There are opportunities for Sixth Form students to attend university lectures and to attend residential courses.

Examinations 2006

At ‘A’ level 54% of students gained Grade A or B.
At ‘AS’ level 61% gained A or B.
In ‘Further Mathematics’ 75% of students gained Grade A or B.
In Year 11 158 students took GCSE Mathematics: 55% of the year gained Grades A*-C.
At the highest level, 25 students gained A* or A.
Students in Year 9 took SATs at KS3. 81% of the year gained Level 5-8.
