The teaching staff in all
faculties make regular use of the library during lesson time, either bringing
whole classes in for research, or sending individuals or small groups
independently as the need arises.
Years Twelve and Thirteen have their own designated area of the library for
private study at all times.
The library has a fully computerised catalogue and issue system with fingerprint
recognition, providing instant access to the entire stock of over 11,000 items
which cover a wide range of media, the largest section of which is an excellent
collection of books both for research and recreational use.
Our large fiction section caters for all ages and abilities within the school,
including many easy-reader titles to ease the transition from familiar
favourites to exciting new reading.
Full time staffing means that the stock can constantly be reviewed, improved and
new items added.
A suite of computers is available with full access to the schools’ network and
internet.
The library subscribes to two newspapers; The Independent and the local
Gazette. A wide range of monthly and weekly periodicals is taken covering many
subjects such as wildlife, science and consumerism. Indexed backfiles are held
for 2-3 years.
A photocopier is provided for students’ use.
There is a growing audio collection of story and oral history tapes. These may
be borrowed or can be listened to in the library.
A file of pamphlets, cuttings and ephemera back up the collection with
items of current interest taken from a wide range of sources.
Students are encouraged to use the library at break, lunchtime and after school
for private study.
A small team of Senior Students and year 8 volunteers support the librarian at
lunchtimes.
Special events such as “ Murder in the Library” mysteries or story telling take
place several times throughout the year, and students can work towards the
“Library Driving Licence” & “Library Passport” awards at break, lunchtimes or
after school.
