The
Expressive Arts Faculty at Chipping Sodbury School contains the
disciplines of Art, Music and Drama. Every student studies each of
these subject areas throughout Key Stage 3. In Years 7 and 8, the
subjects are taught under the title of ‘Expressive Arts’. In year 9,
Art and Music is taught for two hours a cycle and drama once per
cycle. In Years Ten and Eleven Art, Music and Drama are available
as GCSE courses and a BTEC Performing Arts Course. There is also an
entry level Art and Design Course. The Faculty also makes a strong
contribution to short courses in the Sixth Form. Music, Art and
Theatre Studies can also be studied to AS and A2 level.
Teaching takes place in three art rooms, two music rooms with
practice areas, and the drama hall, which is fully equipped for
teaching and performance.

Art
Art is taught to Year Seven students
in teaching groups of around 25. They are introduced to a variety
of media and techniques with specific emphasis upon the development
of the foundation skills which include drawing, colour awareness,
tone, volume, texture, proportion, perspective and the study of
other artists. Students are encouraged to express their own ideas
and gain confidence in their ability through both individual and
group work.
In Years Eight and Nine students continue to build on their skills
and are further able to develop in areas of mixed media,
three-dimensional work and painting and drawing.
There are extra-curricular opportunities in Art and a number of
students take advantage of after school clubs.
The subject is also offered at AS and A2 level and students gain a
varied experience in mixed media and critical and contextual
studies, in addition to basic painting and drawing. A significant
number of students follow the AS and A2 level courses and excellent
results are achieved.
Music
At Key Stage 3 we offer students the
opportunity to experience as wide a variety of music as possible
through listening, composing and performing. Students are
encouraged to work both individually and in groups to develop
practical and creative skills.
At Key Stage 4 (Years 10 and 11) students can opt to follow Music at
GCSE, enabling them to further develop their skills of performance
and composition whilst also exploring music technology.
We have nine peripatetic instrumental teachers and it is possible
for students to learn a wide range of instruments. A charge is made
for lessons. It is also possible for students to take instrumental
exams if they wish.
A full range of extra curricular activities take place at lunch
times – Choir, Orchestra, String Group, Keyboard Club, Flute Choir
and Wind Band in which we are supported by our Music Service
colleagues. We perform regularly in both the local and wider
community and have made 4 concert tours to Europe.
Music is also offered at AS and A2 level with excellent results.
Drama
The subject seeks to help to develop
the potential of each student and is seen less as performance than
adding to the development of the whole student. The emphasis of the
lessons is towards real experiences within a safe framework;
ideally, each student will gain experience of real-life situations
and experience the viewpoints of others within a fabricated context.
Drama makes a contribution to Upper School courses by offering a
GCSE course in Drama. The option to extend studies to advanced
level is catered for with the AS and A2 level Theatre Studies
examination which is a popular Post 16 course.
