LEARNING TO LEARN

What does good learning look like? Does everyone learn in the same way? How do I learn best?

As international links become closer, easier and faster, we need more than ever to understand ourselves as learners.

As more and more careers require flexible employees, we need to develop an understanding of group work and our own methods of learning.

In order to learn more effectively, we need to develop our preferred learning styles.

To ensure we aspire, we need to make the most of our brain and maximize our potential.

Our new innovative “Learning to Learn” course develops all of these skills and answers the learning questions.

What do you do in Learning to Learn?

During Learning to Learn lessons, you will be taken on a journey through learning. During this journey, you will learn new skills and gain a greater understanding of how to be an effective learner. All of the skills and understanding you gain should be transferred in all your subject areas. L2L gives you the learning tools you need for success.

In Year 7 there are 3 modules called I Learner, Team Learner and 21st Century Learner.

Learning to Learn …

  • I Learner – students learn about the human brain and what the requirements are for an effective and efficient learning brain. They are taught strategies for understanding how the brain stores information and tools for remembering and thinking are introduced. They are introduced to the concept of the 5Rs, for effective learning.

  • Team Learner - students work in teams to solve problems together, the purpose behind this is to develop insights into how the students can become better learners whilst contributing to a team. Students gain a clear insight into the roles of team members and how to draw on the strengths of the each of those members. They are introduced to the concept of STEPs to organise team working.

  • 21st Century learner – This module is essentially about communicating, presenting, using, researching and organising information in a 21st Century context. Students develop the skills they need to be a communicator in the 21st Century. During the 21st Century module, students use a variety of software packages and have a final activity where they have the opportunity to go on a road show to Primary Schools to promote the benefits of the Learning to Learn course.

In Year 8 you will build on the skills from Year 7 by:

  • Developing independent learning skills

  • Providing a unique 'personalised' approach to learning

  • Improving exam techniques and memory skills

The modules in Year 8 are I Learner: Peak Performer (Terms 1,2 & 3) and Team Learner: Learning Alongside Others (Terms 4,5 & 6).
